Are you going on a camping trip soon? Or perhaps you’re a frequent mover. The truth is, it’s more convenient to get an air mattress designed for portability, instead of a conventional bed in any case. However, there are so many to choose from and many are just poorly designed.

air mattress and air bedAir leaks, frequent deflation, poorly made air pumps and all round discomfort are all common problems of air mattresses (aka. air beds). It’s frustrating, a waste of time, money and sleep. If you’ve been there before, I know the feeling too.

How To Choose An Air Mattress

It can be a bit confusing when choosing an air bed simply because of the variety of features you need to consider when matching it up to what you plan on using the device for. Some of the more important aspects you need to take into consideration are:

  • Brands: Yes, they do matter when it comes to air beds. A well-known manufacturer will have the experience and resources to produce a high quality product. They’ve seen the flaws and know how to deal with them, which is especially important if you need to exercise the warranty.
  • Comfort Level: This is a matter of opinion rather than a technical feature, but one of the most important aspects nonetheless. There are two ways of knowing how comfortable an air mattress is – Trying it out for yourself, or go by what other users say.
  • Pump Type: Some models have built-in air pumps, but they tend to be more expensive. Other use external pumps which is less convenient but can be used for other air beds too.
  • Inflation Time: When it comes time to sleep, or even just to lay down, you don’t really want to be spending too much time trying to pump up the mattress. The quicker it is, the better.
  • Size: How do you have a partner to share the bed with? Or perhaps you just like more space to yourself. This will determine whether you should get a single, twin, king or queen size.
  • Low Or Raised: This is down to your own preference whether you want an air bed that’s raised, so it feels more like a conventional bed, or a low profile air bed which is lower to the ground, and often cheaper and more reliable. Click here for help between low and raised air mattresses.
  • Weight Capacity: You need an air mattress that can handle the weight that’s going to be on it for the duration of the night. One that’s not capable of handling the weight that’s bestowed upon it can result in air leakage.
  • Weight: If you intend to take it camping, or to travel, ideally you would want something that’s lightweight and has a carry bag.
  • Warranty: Some air mattresses do not come with any warranty, while some offer limited warranty on a period of 30 days to 1 year. This usually indicates that the manufacturer has more faith in their products.
  • Price: You may already have your mind set on certain features you want in an air bed, but are you willing to spend the bit extra to get what you want? Or can you sacrifice a few features and opt for a more inexpensive alternative?

My Top 5 Air Mattresses

Here are my top 5 personal choices in each category. I’ve based my assessment of the three most important factors: Comfort, Reliability and Price.

SimplySleeper SS-49T Raised (Twin)

Average Customer Rating: 4.3 out of 5 stars (4.3 / 5)

best twin air mattressI consider the SimplySleeper SS-49T (read full review here) to be pound-for-pound one of the best value for money twin air mattresses around.

Unlike many other air mattresses, this model is constructed from higher quality PVC material, in the form of Durmothane Polyester Laminate Technology.

Its tripled layered material makes the bed resistant to punctures and stretching, as well as being lightweight and airtight. Its durability allows the bed to handle 400 lbs of weight, instead of 300 lbs, which is the standard for twin air beds.

The built-in air pump is quality too, as it has a thermostat to prevent overheating. Unfortunately, I have yet to test out its comfort (though I would love to!), but the overwhelming consensus is that the microfiber sleeping surface certainly provides a good night’s sleep.

Quick Luxe Sky Blue (Queen Size)

Average Customer Rating: 4.6 out of 5 stars (4.6 / 5)

queen size air mattressIt’s super comfy, solidly built and has an attractive sky blue design that will be a great fit for any bedroom. The Quick Luxe Sky Blue (read full review here) is my choice for a queen size air bed. Many users have stated have comfortable the flocked suede-like sleeping surface is.

Also, Comfort Boulevard, the small business that produces and supplies this model, they’ve been praised for their outstanding customer service, from the time of ordering right through to after the sale.

With only around 3.5% of customer reviews consists of a 2 star rating or lower, the Quick Luxe Sky Blue is one of the most reliable air mattresses around.

The Shrunks Indoor Tuckaire (Toddlers)

Average Customer Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars (4.5 / 5)

toddlers air mattressAt the time of writing, I have yet to have any children myself, but I’ve always advised my friends who do have children and are looking for an air bed, to get The Shrunks Indoor Tuckaire.

The main reason being that it’s made from PVC that doesn’t contain BPS, lead and Phthalates, which are all elements that can be harmful to children, especially if they have any breathing symptoms.

This air bed also has a great design that allows you to tuck a standard crib size bed sheet within the inner sides. This provides warmth and security for your child.

Klymit Static V Air Pad (Camping)

Average Customer Rating: 4.6 out of 5 stars (4.6 / 5)

camping air mattressThere are actually quite a few great air mattresses for camping, some of which I’ve tested out myself. It’s difficult to choose just one, but if I had to, my choice would be the Klymit Static V Air Pad.

I purchased mine last year and have used it many times for sleepovers and camping. Not once has it failed on me, simply because it’s so basic.

It doesn’t use a pump nor does it self-inflate. Instead, you just blow into the valve 10-15 times depending on how big your lungs are and how firm you want the mattress, and voila! You have a warm and comfortable bed.

SoundAsleep Dream Queen Size (Raised)

Average Customer Rating: 4.9 out of 5 stars (4.9 / 5)

best raised air mattressThe SoundAsleep Dream is the highest rated air bed that I’ve come across on Amazon. If it was based on aesthetics alone, the rating would be justified.

Fortunately, its performance is the main reason why so many customers have praised it so much. It’s constructed from puncture resistant PVC and incorporates ComfortCoil Technology, which increase durability and like the name suggests, comfort too.

It has an extra-thick waterproof flocked sleeping surface that adds to the comfort, and the sure-grip bottom ensures that the bed doesn’t slide around. The built-in pump has been described as quiet and effective. Though it’s relatively new, this air bed truly has all the characteristics to become a bestseller.
