There are no bells and whistles with the AeroBed Classic, which is a low profile air mattress that’s an ongoing model in their long running Classic series. It’s pretty much as basic as you can get, but by no means does that insinuate that it’s anything less than good.

AeroBed’s older Classic models are renowned for their quality and simplicity, which has made them extremely popular. Can the newer generation match that of the old? In my review of the modern AeroBed Classic twin and queen sizes, I’ll be revealing the answer to that question.

The AeroBed Classic is great for camping and traveling, and is very easy to set up. Click here to check out both sizes now.

tickTwin & Queen Sizes: Both size choices are available for singles and couples.
tickFlocked Top: The soft flocked sleeping surface provides extra comfort, and is also waterproof.
tickExternal Handheld Pump: Although it doesn’t have a built-in air pump, it includes an external AC one, whereas other manufacturers often do not.
tickSuper Quick Deflation: Renowned Whoosh valve allows the bed to deflate within 15 seconds.
tickLightweight: One of the lightest air beds around, which makes it great for camping trips and traveling.
tickGood Size Carry Bag: Includes a carry bag to stuff your rolled up mattress in after using it. Unlike other carry bags included with other air mattresses, the AeroBed bag provides more than enough space to easily fit in.
tickGreat Customer Service: At the end of 2010, Coleman purchased AeroBed, and now all AeroBed products receive the benefit of Coleman’s superb customer service.

Cons:

crossLimited Pump Options: It appears that the air valve for inflation is unique to only AeroBed pumps, which means you cannot use any other pumps unless it has the specific fitting for AeroBed air mattresses.
crossSlightly Pricey: For a low profile air mattress, it’s a bit expensive when compared to many other low profile air mattresses.

Customer Feedback

The people that know best about the product are those who have actually purchased and tested it out over a period of time. I’ve researched over 50 positive and negative user reviews on Amazon to provide you with a general consensus of customer experiences with the AeroBed Classic Air Mattress.

Construction & Durability

The older AeroBed classics were very durable and reliable. Its low profile design and high quality construction allows it to be. However, ever since Coleman took over AeroBed in late 2010, all their Classic air mattresses underwent a few changes.

For starters, they made the air bed lighter, which makes it more transportable for backpacking camping trips. Though the construction is still sturdy, it doesn’t seem to be as high quality as before, as testified by a few owners of both the old and newer models. However, the price point has dropped in correlation to this.

The air bed is constructed from heavy gauge and puncture resistant PVC, and embodies a 32/48 (twin/queen) oval coil construction for body support. It has a flocked fleece surface that adds comfort and durability to the sleeping surface.

Around 11.2% of customer reviews consists of a 2 star rating or lower on Amazon. This makes it one of the more reliable air mattresses around.

Air Pump

The AeroBed Classic is a simple air mattress, that doesn’t adopt the use of a built-in air pump. It does however, include an powerful external AC pump, that can inflate the twin and queen size air mattresses in less than 60 seconds.

aerobed classic handheld air pump.

The external AC air pump included is similar to the one above.

The handheld pump has an auto-on feature which allows the mattress to be inflated hands-free when clamped onto the bracket on the air mattress. Compared to many other air pumps, the AeroBed pump is fairly quiet. It also comes with adapters which allows you to inflate other inflatable products.

Unfortunately, in order to inflate the AeroBed Classic, an AeroBed pump must be used, since the air valve is unique to their own branded pumps. But the good thing is, deflating the bed is extremely fast at around 15 seconds by using the Whoosh air valve.

Comfort

The general consensus of the comfort level for the AeroBed Classic is that it’s pretty comfortable just like their older generation air mattresses. It doesn’t naturally lose much air overnight, unless the room temperature changes, then it will probably lose a bit of air, as is the case with most air mattresses.

Users that have consistently used it night after night for several weeks or a month, find that they need to top up air every couple weeks or so, in order to get the mattress firm again.

It has been mentioned by several users that the mattress makes a little bit of noise when moving around, but nothing too unbearable.

Price Point

It’s cheaper than the previous generation of AeroBed Classic’s, but in terms of comparing it to similar low profile air beds, it’s slightly more expensive. Given that the brand name is AeroBed, which is for the most part, synonymous with quality air beds, I believe that the price is reasonable.

The official RRP is $80 for a twin, and $100 for a queen size model, as listed on the AeroBed website. However, you may get a better deal on other retail sites such as Amazon, simply because they often have promotions for this air mattress. You can check out the current price here.

Video Demo

It’s not the exact same model, but the video demonstration below shows a very similar British AeroBed Classic (same company). It has all the same features, so you will have a good idea on how it works.

My Conclusion

  • It’s a great air mattress for camping and traveling, since it’s lightweight and so easy to set up.
  • Super-fast inflating at only 60 seconds, and even faster deflation at 15 seconds.
  • The twin size is ideal for children around 8+ years, as well as adults.

Even though many customers feel that the AeroBed Classic is not as good as their older generation of Classic air mattresses, it’s still better than many other low profile air mattresses that’s currently available.

Also, the slight price drop has made the very few changes more acceptable. Overall, it’s a simple but decent air mattress that has satisfied many customers.
