Being a renowned and long-time manufacturer of camping equipment, Coleman should know a thing or two about producing decent air beds. The Coleman Premium QuickBed is one of their most popular queen size air mattresses, and in this review, I’ll be looking at just how premium it really is.

In brief, it has scored an average customer rating of 4.1 out of 5 stars on Amazon, and is popular among couples and families going on the occasional camping trips or weekend getaways.

The Coleman Premium QuickBed queen size air mattress is not the best, but better than most and popular among consumers. Click here to see it now.

tickRaised Air Mattress: At 18 inches high, it’s more or less than same height as a conventional bed, which makes it easier to get in and out of bed.
tickDouble Lock Valve: Allows the air mattress to be inflated and deflated quickly.
tickAirtight System: This ensures that the air mattress remains inflated, with no air loss.
tickSuede Top: The soft suede sleeping surface provides extra comfort, and is also waterproof.
tickBuilt-in AC Pump: The 120V air pump can inflate and deflate the mattress within a few minutes.
tickWrap ‘N’ Roll Storage: Comes included with an attached zippered carry bag for easy storage and transportation.
tickGreat Customer Service: Other than being under warranty for 1 year, Coleman is known to have great customer service which should give you peace of mind when purchasing their air mattresses.

crossCold Sleeping Surface: Although it has a flocked surface, it doesn’t do much do provide warmth. Instead, it’s still rather cold, so a bed sheet may be required.
crossLimited Air Pump Options: There are no automatic settings for firmness, and there’s also no option available for an external air pump to be used.
crossSmall Carry Bag: The included carry bag is too small, which makes it very difficult to fit the air mattress back in after using it.

Customer Feedback

The people that know best about the product are those who have actually purchased and tested it out over a period of time. I’ve researched over 70 positive and negative user reviews on Amazon to provide you with a general consensus of customer experiences with the Coleman Premium QuickBed Air Mattress.

Construction & Durability

Does the Coleman Premium QuickBed have a premium construction and durability? Many customers seem to think so. After all, it is made from a thick heavy-duty and puncture resistant PVC. It’s suede top surface adds to its durability, but not by much, since it’s thinner than seen on other air beds.

Sleeping surface - 35 coils for support.

35 coils for support, but increases the risk of punctures due to having more crevices.

The air mattress has a nice solid feel to it, and there are 35 comfort coils which provides the bed with extra support and stability, something that’s a necessity for heavier individuals.

Sounds good so far right? Then why are roughly 15.4% of customer reviews 2 stars or lower? It’s not the worst rating that I’ve seen, but it’s also not the best. After some investigation, it appears that the majority of the problems come from tears and air leaks (not surprisingly).

But it’s not because of inadequate materials, but rather the design. The 35 coils that add support to the air bed, means that there are more crevices, which means that it’s likelier to tear, since that’s where tears usually occur (along with the seams).

The way to reduce the risk of a tear, is simply just to not pump the air bed up too much, and if you’re going to be using it for several nights or longer, always let a bit of air out so you’ll reduce the pressure on the seams. Half of these problems seem to come from users who have not taken the necessary precautions to prevent punctures from happening.

Though it’s labelled a premium air mattress, it’s not quite there, probably a couple notches below, which is acceptable when you factor in its reasonable price and the fact that Coleman has exceptional customer service, offering quick replacements should any manufacturing faults occur.

Air Pump

If you like to keep things simple, then you’ll like the air pump on the Coleman Premium QuickBed. All it has is the controls located on the pump itself, rather than on a remote. There’s really nothing much to dislike about it, and customers have attested to that.

However, being a supposed premium air mattress, I feel it would have been better to include an inlet for an external air pump to be used, since many customers purchase this air mattress to take on trips. Not having one just means that you would have to either use a DC inverter, or a portable power generator when going on trips where there’s no AC socket.

It does has other good points going for it though, including the extra-wide Advanced Double Lock Valve which allows the air bed to be quickly deflated. Firmness can also be maintained by leaving the pump plugged in overnight, while the  air is switched off, but it doesn’t automatically add air like some other air mattresses.

This can be a good or a bad thing depending on how you look at it. The good is that you won’t suddenly wake up in the middle of the night to the air pump doing its thing, but the bad news is that should there be any air loss at all, it won’t be topped up.

The general consensus of the comfort level on the Coleman Premium QuickBed is not that it’s uncomfortable, but rather that it’s not the most comfortable bed.

Suede sleeping surface.

Comfortable but cold suede sleeping surface.

Granted, the suede sleeping surface is nice to sleep on if you don’t decide to put bed sheets over it, but since it’s quite thin, many customers have mentioned that it’s too cold to sleep on. This is a problem in colder climates and for people who prefer sleeping warm.

If you fall into this criteria, then a regular queen size fitted bed sheet is what you need to keep the surface warmer. The good thing is that once you fall asleep, you’ll likely remain asleep because the air mattress is neither squeaky nor does it move much.

The suede sleeping surface is also waterproof, which is great if you have kids that tend to accidentally spill drinks, or if you decide use the air bed as a sofa too.

Price Point

The price for the Coleman Premium QuickBed is considered to be very reasonable, which is why it’s as popular as it is. It is one of the better air mattresses around, so I do consider it to be worth it’s RRP of $150.

However, there are always deals on this model on Amazon, and if you catch it at the right time, you may get a good deal. I don’t like to mention current prices in my reviews since they’re always changing, but you can check the current price of the Coleman Premium QuickBed Air Mattress here.

My Conclusion

  • Not the best air mattress on the market, but one of the better ones and worth its price.
  • Construction and use of materials are solid, but the surface design makes it a bit more susceptible to punctures.
  • Excellent customer service by Coleman, with a quick replacement service should you be unfortunate to have something go wrong with your air mattress.

Overall, the Coleman Premium QuickBed is a very good air mattress, but not great. If you’re unlucky to be one of the 15% or so customers who experiences problems with the air mattress, then you can be confident of getting a replacement (unless it’s through the user’s own fault of course, which happens to be the case quite frequently).

However, if you take good care of your air mattress and it has no defects, then you can expect a very long lifespan from it. Many users who have used it occasionally for around 2 years and more, have never experienced any issues with it. It’s certainly one of the more reliable air mattresses, and one that’s worth a purchase.
