Yet again, one of Intex’s air mattresses has made it onto the best sellers and most popular list. This time, it’s the Intex Deluxe Pillow Rest series, which is simple, looks luxurious but at the same time, very affordable.

In this review, I’ll go in-depth and find out if the popularity of their twin and queen size models (both exactly the same, just different size) stems from quality, price or both.

Customer Feedback

The people that know best about the product are those who have actually purchased and tested it out over a period of time. I’ve researched 100 positive and negative user reviews on Amazon to provide you with a general consensus of customer experiences with the Intex Deluxe Pillow Rest Air Mattress.

Construction & Durability

When you first feel the Intex Deluxe Pillow Rest air mattress, it feels sturdy and nice. After all, it’s supposed to be, because it’s constructed from thick Vinyl which consists of 15 gauge sides and bottom, and a 21 gauge waterproof flocked top surface.

intex deluxe pillow rest construction

Bottom of the queen size. You can see the ribbed sections that are at risk of popping from within.

It also features a dual chamber design, and separate ribbed sections inside the air bed which helps to hold the bed flat during inflation, and to provide consistent air flow within the bed. It all sounds good so far doesn’t it?

Well, two of those three features are actually useful, but one of them is more of a flaw that won’t show itself initially, but at some point during the bed’s lifetime, it will.

I’m talking about the last ribbed sections design. While it sounds clever, the inside sections can come unglued one by one and as a result, certain sections will expand and leave behind large lumps. You will instantly know when this happens because there will be a loud pop to signify this, which will likely startle you if it happens in the middle of the night.

Whether or not this actually happens to you, and when it happens, will be determined by how you use your air mattress (if you have kids jumping on it, expect it to happen sooner), how well you manage the air flow (via inflation/deflation) and by pure luck.

Not to mention that just like any other air mattress, it’s susceptible to air leaks and tears around the ridges (which this bed has a lot of) and seams.

On average for both sizes, around 21.2% of customer reviews consists of a 2 star rating or lower on Amazon, which falls below average for air mattresses. The majority of dissatisfied customers see their air mattress fail within the first 3 months.

However, users who have taken proper care of their air mattress, use it for a few nights every few months, and providing it has no manufacturing defect, usually see an average lifespan of between 8-14 months.

Air Pump

Built-in Air Pump

There’s nothing bad to say about the built-in AC pump. It’s real basic and easy to use. Just turn the knob left or right to inflate and deflate the mattress. Once the bed is inflated, you can actually be laying on the bed and still be able to easily reach the air valve and switch, allowing you to adjust the bed’s firmness.

The pump is no louder than your average vacuum cleaner, which is the case for many air mattress pumps. Deflation is just as easy as inflation, and takes less than 90 seconds.

There’s also a neat little storage compartment for the cord and plug to go in, which is especially useful if you have kids running about.

Soft flocked sleeping surfaceComfort

Most users find the Intex Deluxe Pillow Rest very comfortable with its soft flocked surface, which is good enough to sleep on without bed sheets. If you do prefer bed sheets, it takes standard twin and queen size sheets, which will fit nicely around the indent that’s on perimeter of the bed. Non-fitted sheets are also suitable, because the top surface has enough grip to prevent the bed sheet from sliding around.

One of the main selling points is of course, the pillow rest section, which serves as either a pillow replacement, or a pillow riser, as well as keeping the pillows from sliding off.

The shape of the sleeping surface curves slightly to the center, which is intended to stabilize your body and prevent you from rolling off the edge. However, some users find that it makes it a bit more difficult to get out of bed, especially when it’s slightly deflated.

Video Demo

Below is a demonstration video created by a customer, which shows you how the bed is inflated and deflated.

My Conclusion

  • It would’ve been a great bed if it wasn’t for its design flaw which affects a small percentage of this model.
  • It’s comfortable and will serve well as a temporary bed for either guests or you and your partner.
  • Very easy to set up and adjust the level of firmness.

Despite the flaws and higher than average dissatisfied customer rate, when the Intex Deluxe Pillow Rest is at its optimum, it performs well in all areas. But the question is how long it will remain like that for. Definitely a lot longer if you take the right steps to increase its lifespan.

In the end, this bestselling air mattress from Intex is best used as a temporary air bed that’s to be used only on occasions, not for long periods of time.
