One of the bestselling air mattresses ever is the Intex Pillow Rest Raised, with nearly 2,000 customer reviews on Amazon at the time of writing (Jan 2014), with most of them being generally positive.

In this review, I’m going to dig a little deeper into their model, and find out why this air mattress is so popular, more so than other air mattresses that have garnered higher ratings. For starters, I can already see it’s much cheaper than other models, especially now that it’s on a deal.

Customer Feedback

The people that know best about the product are those who have actually purchased and tested it out over a period of time. I’ve researched over 100 positive and negative user reviews on Amazon to provide you with a general consensus of customer experiences with the Intex Pillow Rest Raised Air Mattress.

Construction & Durability

When it’s first pumped, it looks and feels durable, and has a simple design to it. Though this is the case, you must bear in mind that this air bed is constructed from vinyl, albeit, heavy duty (15 gauge sides and 6 gauge bottom). Nonetheless, vinyl is the most basic and cheapest material used on inflatables.

Since it appears that this air mattress is more susceptible to punctures, more care should be taken when inflating it. A lot of the times, people are unaware that they’re inflating their air beds over sharp objects or surfaces, therefore causing accidental punctures.

And because of the lower quality material, I suspect this is the reason why the Intex Pillow Rest Raised has a higher than usual defect rate, and a short warranty term. For a tiny bit of peace of mind, it comes with a repair kit, just incase something does happen to the air bed.

However, when it works, it works good. It’s able to withstand up to 300 / 600 lbs (twin/queen) of weight with no issues. Nearly three-quarters of customers who either have had no problems with their air mattress (typically between 12-18 months of use), or have taken care of it properly, have praised this model on its quality and value for money.

Air Pump

The built-in air pump is easy-to-use. All you need to do to get your air mattress ready is to open the hatch, take the plug out of its handy storage compartment, and plug it into the wall.

Built-in Air Pump

The built-in pump can inflate/deflate and is also compatible with an external air pump.

It’s so simple and basic that you have to manually switch off the air pump after reaching your desired firmness, whereas other air mattresses have built-in pumps that have automatic settings.

It does however, inflate and deflate pretty quick, with most users getting a time of around 2/3 minutes (twin/queen). The noise level of the pump is loud, comparable to a vacuum cleaner, but certainly not as loud as other air mattresses with built-in pumps.

One really useful thing about the air pump is that an external air pump can be used, which makes it extremely useful for camping trips. There’s a valve opening in the center dial, sized for a manual pump that must have a hose that can fit through this hole.

Comfort

The overall comfort level of Intex Pillow Rest Raised Air Mattress is that it’s really comfortable, even more so than a foam and spring mattress according to some users. The ridges are deep so that it keeps you within the sides and the center of the bed.

Even with the heaviest weight capacity, it’s said not to wobble or move around much. This is excellent stability and great for people with back pains, as one user pointed out.

It has been described of having a waterbed type feel to it, especially when it’s not pumped to its maximum capacity, since certain individuals prefer to sleep this way. The flocked top gives an extra touch of luxury (though it’s far from) and warmth.

If you intend to use this air bed over a period of time, then expect to top it up with air every week or so, in order to maintain its shape and firmness.

Price Point

I believe that the main reason for the success of the Intex Pillow Rest Raised Air Mattress is due to its low price. The twin bed RRPs at $55, and the queen at $60, but they’re always on promotional offer, and having monitored the prices over the past couple months, it’s likely to remain on offer.

Due to the low price point, this air mattress will be perfect for a temporary air bed used for camping trips, traveling, sleepovers and weekend getaways. It’s cheap enough that you don’t have to worry much about its long-term viability.

I won’t mention how much it is at the moment, because it can change at any given time, and will vary from seller to seller. But if you can check the current price of the Intex Pillow Rest Raised Air Mattress here.

My Conclusion

  • Well designed, but the use of cheaper quality materials reduces its durability.
  • Cheap enough mattress to not have to worry about its long-term capabilities.
  • Excellent for camping trips, weekend getaways and guest beds.

Despite its higher than normal complaints, if what you’re looking for is a temporary air mattress that will probably only be used days or weeks at a time, then the Intex Pillow Rest Raised Air Mattress fits the bill.

Just don’t have it in your mind that this air mattress will last you forever, because it will likely only last you 12-18 months or maybe a little while longer, providing its free from defects and you take care of it well.

If you’re looking for a twin air mattress that is a bit more reliable, and capable enough to withstand long-term use, then I would recommend Insta-Bed Never Flat or Coleman Premium QuickBed instead.
